Fluval U Fliter stopped working
My Fluval U Filter has stopped working. How can I fix it?
The U Filters are by far one of the most successful internal filters on the market and the returns rate on this line is virtually non-existent. A little simple maintenance is generally all that is needed and there are a few things that can be tried as well as what has been done so far.
When cleaning the impeller it should be completely removed from the impeller well, and washed thoroughly paying attention to the magnet also. If there is lime scale build up on the impeller (a fine white powdery deposit) this can be removed by soaking the impeller in a 50:50 vinegar and water solution for 10 minutes. Rinse well before refitting.
Clean out the impeller well with a cotton bud or similar.
Replace foams on a regular basis, cleaning will work for so long but the foams do need to be replaced. Turning the foams round through 180 degrees will prolong the life a little.
Ensure venturi valve is out of water and is fully open.
The venturi valve must be cleaned occasionally, as the little hole can clog resulting in decreased flow.
Ensure the +/- valve on the U1 is fully set to + meaning that the valve is fully open.
On the U2/3/4 for maximum water movement the setting needs to be on A as the water will come out of the top valve. When set on B (spray bar) or C (lower valve) the water movement is not as obvious although often just as strong.
Water movement will not be "turbulent". This is a filter not a pump, and as such does not produce bubbles. If bubbles are seen when new this is due to an airlock. When the bubbles subside this means that the filter is running more, not less, efficiently.
For all models - sometimes an airlock can occur. To resolve this, unplug the filter but with it still under the water turn it upside down and give it a vigorous shake. This will dispel trapped air. Reposition and turn on (after drying hands).
