Aquarium Green Water
We have green water. No algae on anything, just in water. Tank is near front windows. Have tried to leave the lights off and am using two external filters. They don't remove it. I thought we need to use a UV sterilizer. What is your solution?

Green water is suspended algae, and that will be killed by a UV Sterilizer - actually in pond situations they disrupt the chloroplast cells and that kills the algae. This is the most expensive way to control it, but in your case, this may be the only real way to do it on a long term control basis. In less radical cases, I tend to recommend a full background (including sides) to reduce the greatest amount of light, and to keep any direct sunlight from striking the aquarium. Then the use of a Diatom, will remove the algae cells to clear water. I then suggest the use of Turtle Clean to inoculate the aquarium with a powerful team of beneficial bacteria that will outcompete the algae cells over time and control and limit them. They do this by getting and incorporating the vital elements algae needs to bloom within the bacterial biomass faster and more efficiently that the algae can. This "competitive exclusion" is beneficial all around because in addition, sludge and solubilizable wastes (the "fertilizer" for algae) is reduced and controlled while the overall water quality improves. Turtle Clean - Waste Control and Cycle all employ a truly bacterial approach to water purification. They do take a longer time to establish a critical mass and dominant population status. They should be added on a weekly basis since they are always under pressure from other bacterial strains that are not as beneficial to the tank environment. Even with a UV, I would still suggest that you try these products, they can do nothing but improve your overall eco-system.
