Calcium in Fresh Water
What is the acceptable and dangerous level of calcium in a freshwater aquarium?
What is the acceptable and dangerous level of calcium in a freshwater aquarium?
Calcium has no toxicity by itself. Calcium in freshwater is directly related to water’s salinity (conductivity). The higher the calcium concentration, the higher will be the water salinity. Sensitivity of fish to salinity depends of fish species. If you believe the hardness or salinity of the water is too high, adding peat moss into the filter will soften water. Contact your local fish store to determine any special requirements of fishes in the community.
General hardness is a good indicator of water’s salinity, unless a water softening device is used. General hardness is composed mainly of calcium and magnesium. A measure of general water hardness (GH/KH test kit) and a calcium test kit is required to establish the ratio of calcium to magnesium in the water. See the back of the Calcium Test kit booklet for more information. Normally, soft water has a general hardness less than 60 mg/L as CaCO3.
