Fish Food life span after opening
How long will fish food stay nutritious after it has been opened?
How long will fish food stay nutritious after it has been opened?
In most instances processed dry foods should be used within 6 months of purchase, preferably not longer.
The best storage policy is to store any opened containers in a dark cooler location if possible to maximize life. Heat and light degrade vitamin content rapidly and overall reduction in food quality.
Keep the product dry at all times. Do not handle the contents of a can with wet hands. It is much better to shake a little of the food into the cap of the container and use this to sprinkle the food to the aquarium. Wet hands, and moisture in general will degrade the nutritional quality of even the best food very rapidly.
Purchase as much food as can be easily consumed by the aquarium inhabitants in the six month limit. It is much better to purchase a wider variety of assorted foods in smaller containers and feed a range of foods over time than to stay with a single fish food until it is completely finished. Variety is the spice of life, and for fish, there are always slight variations in the types of nutritional elements that various species may require. By switching between various foods over the feeding cycle, the use of many types of food helps ensure that each fish gets exposed to each of the nutrients that they require for health, maximum growth and readiness for spawning.
