Aqua-Plus Dosage
How much Aqua-Plus do you add to a 20 gallon tank when just starting it for the first time?
How much Aqua-Plus do you add to a 20 gallon tank when just starting it for the first time?
Each bottle of Aqua-Plus does contain the dose for an aquarium in ten gallon increments. Use 5 mL of the product for each ten (U.S.) gallons of water. Assuming the tap water is standardly treated with chlorine.
There are cases where the municipal water supply water must either be transported a great distance, or it is stored for a greater than average time and is treated with chloramine. It is these circumstances where the directions stipulate a double dosage to eliminate this compound. In this case, the dosage originally would be 10 mL for a standard 10 (U.S.) Gallon quantity. Some ammonia will be released when the chlorine-ammonia bond is broken by the neutralizer, this is not removed by the product. If in doubt, ask your local pet store what treatments to make the water safe for human consumption are added by the local water company uses in your area. Chloramine additions are not very common, but the compound does not evaporate away, it is deadly and must be removed if it is present.
Since this is a new tank, you are treating for the entire volume of the water, as such, if you have standard tap water, two teaspoons (10 mL) should be added to the aquarium. When chloramine has been determined to be present, 20 mL should be added for the same amount of water.
The best place to treat all new water added to the aquarium is before it is added to ensure there is no chlorine or metal toxicity reaching the fish. In most cases the aquarist transports water from the tap to the aquarium in a bucket. The doses, just for the actual water in the bucket, should be added to the bucket so that there is no danger when new water is poured into the tank. Remember, there is no need to treat for the entire tank volume every time, just the amount of new water actually added to the tank.
