Re-use of Biological filtration Media
Can I use old biological media?
Can I use old biological media?
Physical filter material that supports the bacteria colonies of a biological filter can be re-used if they are washed or rinsed off with non-chlorinated water. This technique will remove excess wastes and leave active cultures on the filter. If the biological material relies on microscopic pores in the material to house the bacteria, such as Bio-Max, remember that these pores will become clogged over time and reduce the amount of bacteria they will house dramatically.
Aquarium water is useful for rinsing the filter; this avoids chemical and temperature shocks. Never replace all filter material at the same time as you will throw away a large part of the biological filter. A good filter should have at least two parts to the biological substrate so that it is not all replaced at the same time.
