We usually recommend choosing a filter that is rated for a larger aquarium.

If you had a 10 gallon tank, I would recommend the model 20. However, the model 20 would be the bare minimum for a 20 gallon tank. I would normally recommend the model 30 for a 20 gallon aquarium. However, if you will have messy fish such as goldfish, or plan to have a heavily stocked tank, you may want to consider the 50.

There is no such thing as too much filtration, but water flow should be taken into consideration. If you have delicate fish they may not be able to handle the current. However, the water flow on all Aqua Clear filters is adjustable.
