Fish Behavior
My fish keeps playing dead, what can I do?
My fish keeps playing dead, what can I do?
It is really difficult to comment on why your fish may be behaving in this way. You should get the water of your aquarium tested for pH, Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate, just to ensure that the water quality is okay. Many problems may stem from poor water quality.
From past experience with fantail's and Orandas which are the stubby type of goldfish, these types are prone to digestive complaints. It would not be uncommon to see these types of fish going onto their sides, especially after feeding. The reason for this is they basically become constipated. Usually the problem resolves when you change their diet to a diet that is high in fibre. Another option is to buy live coldwater plants, when they eat the plant they obtain fibre through the plant.
Now this does not necessarily apply to your fish and it could well be that your fish might have something more serious. In all cases where there is a problem we must suggest you speak with a member of staff at a specialist Aquatics Store or contact your local vet, although the vet will probably want to see the fish before he gives you any diagnosis.
