We are sorry to hear about the problem you have had containing fry with your breeding trap.
This has become more of a problem due to the mass breeding of live bearers. The adult fish that are now being supplied from Singapore fish farms are now about 20% smaller than they were 15 years ago. This dwarfing of the adults has also led to much smaller fry, so a breeder that has worked for many years can suddenly be too large to hold the fry from falling through the required ventilation slots in the bottom. There is a fine line between keeping the newly born fry in the bottom portion of the trap and suffocating them due to the inability for water to flow properly through the slots.
When a problem such as this is encountered, and the parents are smaller than the trap seems to be designed for, it can be much better to use a net trap with plenty of fine leaved plants inside. The common breeder traps are often a good choice for the larger Mollies and Swordtails.
