FX5 Media and Positioning
Are there any considerations I should know about when adding media to my FX5?
Are there any considerations I should know about when adding media to my FX5?
The FX5 comes with 6 foam inserts (two in each basket) only, other media is not included.
Adding too much media can cause excessive bubbling and reduced flow.
Generally, the less media, the better, as long as it is within reason. Ideally the FX5 should be set up as follows:
Foam Inserts in all baskets - as it comes with the product.
Bio Max ceramic rings in the bottom and middle baskets
It is not really necessary to add any other media unless a specific media type is required to do a particular function in the aquarium:
Examples:
Should a polishing pad be used, it should be placed in the bottom basket for about two weeks maximum. After that period it normally clogs and reduces flow from the system.
If another media type, such as carbon, peat, zeo-carb, is used; it may be advisable to reduce the amount of Bio Max used.
When adding pre-filter ceramic rings, reduce the amount of Bio Max
Once media has been added or changed, wait between 48 and 72 hours to allow the system to perform the self purge two or three times to expel excess air from the system.
