Maintaining an established tank with Cycle
Does adding Cycle help to maintain an established aquarium?
Does adding Cycle help to maintain an established aquarium?
Simply put, good and bad bacteria inhabit and constantly multiply in an aquarium. The fish are constantly producing urine which in turn is a source of ammonia. Respiration of the aquatic inhabitants also provides a source of ammonia in the aquarium. By adding Cycle regularly you are building population of the most beneficial bacteria, causing them to become the dominant strain.
You should add Cycle whenever you do a water change and especially when changing your media. The bacterial filter is often damaged when treating illnesses so it should also be added after medication. The dormant bacteria in the bottle will activate and seed new media rapidly to ensure stable ammonia and nitrite reduction over time. You should follow the instructions on the bottle. It varies depending on fresh or salt water and from a new set-up to an established system.
