Phos-X Phosphate Remover in Saltwater
Is Phos-X safe to use in salt water reefs?
Is Phos-X safe to use in salt water reefs?
Phos-X should be safe as long as it is properly administered, in other words proper volume calculation should be undertaken for a reef tank. Use an approximate 20 % reduction to account for water displacement due to live rock use and substrate, etc. However, in the case of a properly managed reef aquarium where fish populations consist of small species, non-harmful to most corals, limited fish population with low nitrogen input in general (ie, fish food etc.), and nutrient poor water source (especially nitrogen and phosphate), there should be no real need for a resin based product. The most necessary application typically involves higher fish populations where the food input/fish waste can contribute to phosphate and nitrate accumulations and the possible algae growth etc.
Phos-X is a resin based product and as such can rapidly change water characteristics. Reef aquariums containing corals should strive to maintain a stable environment. Typical water change is 5 to 10% per week, large scale water changes with water containing phosphate could be the reason for phosphates in this particular aquarium.
If phosphate accumulations are due to tap water/source water rich in phosphate it would be advisable to eliminate the source of the problem by incorporating an R/O unit. Reefs very typically are nutrient poor and an R/O is an ideal method of providing this nutrient void water. This would then address the cause of the problem and provide a stable consistent way of addressing it.
Phosphate accumulations in aquariums can be due to fish food. Nutrafin Max Marine flake in combination with our industry leading Spirulina Flake foods (30% percent Spirulina inclusion rate) would be recommended in this case, as it was noticed that the feeding regimen only included frozen foods. Nutrafin Max foods provide highly digestible ingredients and no excess phosphate, with fully stabilized vitamins and are the recommended core diet for most aquariums (High nutritive value per weight ratio).
