pH Importance
Why is pH so important?
Why is pH so important?
There is an acid/base balance within the blood system of fish. If fish are kept significantly out of range or rapid changes take place, this critical balance can be affected. Species of fish which evolved at extreme ends of the normal pH range for fish life are generally more sensitive to fluctuations or changes and can have serious reactions to abrupt pH fluctuations. Perhaps one of the best examples of freshwater species are discus. When acclimating these fish, make sure to employ a drip technique and provide a period of at least 30 to 60 minutes to ensure all water characteristics are given time to become adjusted, especially pH.
