Carbonate and Total Hardness Test Kit - Marine Results
I am not getting any results for Hardness in my marine tank
I am not getting any results for Hardness in my marine tank
Marine water contains rather large concentrations of calcium and magnesium. This is why salt water hardness is monitored with hydrometer for specific gravity. A hydrometer offers a direct measure of the dissolved salt in the water. Basically, it is not pertinent to monitor general hardness, measuring calcium is sufficiant and vital.
This is perfectly understandable, since the levels of hardness in any marine tank are about 6500 mg/L as CaCO3. The GH test kit was not designed to work directly with hardness in a saltwater aquarium. To actually get a change in color, on a drop basis it would take at least 325 drops to show a change!
This does not mean that you can't use the GH test kit to measure hardness in saltwater at all, it just requires a different test methodology to dilute the water to a level where testing is appropriate. Look at the Answer 343 "Which test kit will measure Magnesium in saltwater?" for the actual methods to use to get a valid result for hardness in this situation.
